Published games

There are quite a few good published commercial games out there that are useful in the classroom:

HISTORY

Axis and Allies

There are WW1 and WW2 versions of Axis and Allies. There are versions where you fight the whole war, and versions where you just compete in one theatre, such as the Pacific in WW2. Nothing like sending troops into battle to understand the military strategy of the 20th century’s great conflicts.

Timeline

Timeline is a card game played using 220 cards. There are lots of different versions – historical events, art history etc. Each card depicts a historical event, invention or discovery on both sides, with the year in which that event occurred, invention or discovery was made on only one side. Players take turns placing a card from their hand in a row on the table. After placing the card, the player reveals the date on it. If the card was placed correctly with the date in chronological order with all other cards on the table, the card stays in place; otherwise the card is removed from play and the player takes another card from the deck.

The first player to get rid of all his cards by placing them correctly wins

ECONOMICS

Acquire

Acquire is a multi-player mergers and acquisitions themed board game. It is played with tiles representing hotels that are arranged on the board, play money and stock certificates. The object of the game is to earn the most money by developing and merging hotel chains. When a chain in which a player owns stock is acquired by a larger chain, players earn money based on the size of the acquired chain. At the end of the game, all players liquidate their stock in order to determine which player has the most money.
