A learning adventure is a unique way of learning about a topic.
- students work in small groups, learning about a topic in a first person narrative way
- students work in cooperative competition
- develops collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking skills
The adventures
For all of them, these instructions should be handy.
- Year 10 Geography – Defenders of the Coast (coastal management unit)
- Year 8 History – Spanish Conquest of the Americas – Invasion of the conquistadores
- Year 8 Geography – Antarctica activity
- Year 9 History – WW1 – 11th battalion expedition
- Year 7 History – Ancient China -Xuanzang’s timeship adventure
- Year 6 History – AusQuest
- this one has also been put online (online version)
- The online version has some more detailed instructions for teachers and suggested questions to ask the students while playing the learning adventure here
- And it even has a video game at the end of it!
- Year 7 Geography – Water in the World unit – “H2YOLO”
Year 9 History – “War Correspondents”
- this is a ‘choose your own adventure’ one where students take on the role of a journalist around the period of WW1
- made for the Defining Moments exhibit at the National Museum of Australia
Year 5 History – “The Spiritstone Saga”
- this is a ‘choose your own adventure’ one where students take on the role of a young person exploring Australia around the time of first contact
- made for the Defining Moments exhibit at the National Museum of Australia
Here is a map showing how students progress through the unit, and highlighting that the students all learn the compulsory curriculum material:
Year 5/6 Science – “Alien Alliance”
I made a mini science unit. The whole adventure is encompassed in this website: www.alienalliance.org
During their adventure they will learn facts about:
- light
- energy
- electricity
They will also learn skills:
- askinq questions
- doing experiments
- creating graphs
- communicating visually (using photos, posters and videos).
PD
I’ve also made a “Learning Adventures 2.0” PD here. This contains the new updated and gamified version of the Year 8 History Learning adventure (way better, in my opinion…).

Drop me a line if you have a question about how to run these…
